The boss would summon drones that shoot laser spreads that could easily kill you if you weren't careful, plus since the boss is barriered, they couldn't take any hitstun from attacks. The boss would stop moving if certain limbs tried to attack you, so every time melee players managed to stop it by dodging or tanking an attack was super valuable for the party.Īnother tough one was a story boss where the boss spends 100% of the fight protected in an armored barrier. Melee would stay up front blocking attacks and generally trying to do damage while slowing it down. You could only knock it back by breaking its parts, so whoever was playing caster would spam big spells while looking out for enemy spells that would probably do about 50% of your life if they hit you. For example, there's a cave worm boss where the boss takes up the whole right side of the screen and it would slowly move to the left, limiting your movement. Many bosses also needed special strats to win on higher difficulties, which we could really only pull off with multiple human players.ĭestiny R in particular had quite a few interesting boss fights that were fun in multiplayer. When doing stuff like the no AI/healer runs, it was a lot more important to coordinate with teammates since you had to have someone pull aggro so others could heal up safely because life bottles were a limited resource. We even made saves before every boss so we could fight them again whenever we wanted using different characters and strategies. Play through the game skipping cutscenes while doing whatever we feel like doing at the time, like no healers(item healing only), no AI party members allowed, 2x/4x/8x damage, etc.

But this means I'll be playing is SP with my gf watching like most other RPGs.Īnother co-op player here, we've probably spent hundreds of hours on Tales of Destiny PS2 alone, who knows how many hours it'd add up to if it included Destiny 2, Rebirth, Graces F, and Xillia 2.

I really hope that they either patch multiplayer in, or modders add it on PC.

Playing with spellcasters/healers in some games weren't very fun either. Very rarely do the Tales games feel like they are 100% meant to be co-op, you'd have 1v1 boss battles, sequences where good party members leave, and sometimes it took a while to get some decent cast members. Zestria's armatize feature and mechanics with the non-human characters also wasn't that great for that stuff. Xillia's team-up mechanic wasn't always the kindest for co-op. It was always clear that the tales games treated co-op as a second fiddle. Of my first playthroughs, here is my co-op frequency:

Even out of battle, we'd coordinate where to go, and what to do. There is something special about playing an RPG long-term with someone and seeing it all unfold together. Tales games certainly have a great co-op, and it's a very fun feature. I've played most of the Tales games, and a majority of the time I played co-op with my sibling, and later girlfriend.
